Insurances

The management committee is responsible for ensuring all appropriate insurances are taken out and paid. It is recommended that one member of staff and one member of the management committee take joint responsibility to oversee insurances and see that they are kept up to date. They should report to the management committee once a year, prior to renewal.

When should insurance be reviewed?

Insurance should be reviewed annually prior to renewal dates OR when circumstances of the setting change, these could include situations such as a change in: venue, session times, the number of children, and the age of children.

Other than legal responsibilities, what else should and should not be covered?

Contents insurance

It is advisable to arrange contents insurance to cover equipment against theft or damage, including accidental damage or vandalism.

Buildings insurance

The cover is generally arranged by the freeholder of the property. If the setting do not own the freehold check with the landlord that adequate cover is included within the rent.

Compulsory Insurance

Employers Liability Insurance - This is compulsory if you have people working for you or if you are a limited company. This will cover will protect your legal liability against your staff sustaining injuries at their workplace.

A copy of the employers’ liability insurance certificate must be kept on display in the work place.

Public Liability Insurance - This covers your legal liability to members of the public for injury sustained whilst in your care or in connection to the work your business is carrying out. You can cover your business for different values, however in order to meet the funding criteria for Dorset Sure Start your business will need to have £5 million public liability cover.
